Caine’s Arcade
Caine’s Arcade is a hit on Vimeo, Facebook and traditional media outlets. However, there are possibly some of you who don’t know about Caine or his arcade. Let me tell you…
Caine is a 9-year-old boy who went to work with his dad every day during the summer. His dad owns an auto parts shop in Los Angeles. While Caine was passing time at his dad’s shop he began to build cardboard arcade games (pop-a-shot, foosball, etc). He even came up with a system to play and pay.
Nothing happened.
Caine built this incredible (for a 9-year-old) arcade to no acclaim, no customers, no support (beyond his dad).
I know that feeling. I know the feeling of pouring my heart and soul into a project only to have no one else champion it or even pay attention. It hurts. It is painful to see your dream languish.
My job is…
This week I listened to a wonderful interview with musician Eric Hutchinson on NPR. Eric has a story similar to Caine’s. He started his career the old-fashioned way by signing with a record label. Then it all fell apart…the label went under. Nothing happened.
Eric had an epiphany along the way. He said this:
My job is to make music and perform it. The rest will take care of itself.
Eric began focusing on his job – creating music and finding ways to share it. It was his job, and the rest took care of itself.
What is your job? Have you defined it?
There is more to creating a successful photography business than just taking pictures, but it starts with creating images. A good photography business begins and ends with creating images people connect with.
Eric Hutchinson fell into rhythm doing his job. He has created a successful career by crafting music people heard and connected with.
Caine found his job. He found satisfaction in it.
Building something you love.
Caine and Eric both found purpose by building and creating things they love. Your job, should be something you love to do. There might be aspects you don’t enjoy as much, but the whole picture should be something you love.
For Caine and Eric they both started with building something they were passionate about. It’s how they found their jobs.
