Thanks to my lovely wife, who bought us tickets for my birthday, I was able to see Imogen Heap in concert in Lawrence, Kansas the other night. Now some of you might think because we are in the professional photography industry we might have a camera with us at all times so as to be able to show images from everything we’ve done, especially really cool experiences like a concert – wrong. I searched the web, and it seems as if people from Kansas don’t post their images online. So I did the next best thing, pulled an image from a different venue…
I have enjoyed Imogen’s music for the last year, so I knew it was very electronic in nature, but I was amazed at how she and her “band” (term band used loosely since it wasn’t a band in the normal drums, guitar, bass, piano sense) created music. Basically, she and each of the band members would create a piece of music (on piano, harpsichord, guitar with violin bow, voice, etc) and then loop that sound and move on to a new sound, until it was ready then actually sing the song.
Each of her opening acts were the same (Levi Weaver and Kid Beyond). Levi Weaver was the guitar player for Heap and the first opening act. He made some really cool music with his guitar and voice – amazing. Even more amazing was the 2nd opener – Kid Beyond. A beatboxer, who made complete trance, techno songs with his mouth and a loop machine. It can’t really be explained – it just has to be seen. I have both of their cd’s and anticipate really being able to listen to both.
Overall, it made me think about the state of emerging technologies and how it is changing every industry and life in general. Photographer’s, at times, (some more than others) complain about how “it’s just not the same” since the world has moved away from film. It’s true, but life isn’t standing still – for anyone. I think one thing most people would love to be known as is an innovator. But it just doesn’t happen for most people. I think because most people are slow to embrace change (in any aspect of their lives). Seeing things like the Imogen Heap concert, makes me want to embrace change…
