So, I was watching American Idol with Kia (her favorite show I think), and I haven’t watched a whole lot this season. Past seasons, I’ve watched a lot more. It’s been tough to really get into it, because except for a few of them their either isn’t a lot of talent or personality – from my perspective. Good enough, but not great.
So, I’m watching and the new girl judge (Kara, I think?) makes a comment on Danny Gokey‘s performance. She said something to the effect of “You did a great job of creating an emotion with the audience. You had us captured.” Not the exact words, but something along those lines. She said it and it struck me.
First, from what Kia has said to me about Danny is that he has led the worship at his church – professionally I think. So, when Kara said “You captured the emotion” I thought, of course he did. That is something he knows how to do. The best ministers know how to draw you in emotionally. This of course is what has given the church a bad name, and has been used by some in a negative manipulative way. But again, the best ministers connect not just on a spiritual or cognitive level but also on the emotional level.
Then as I thought about it more, I thought that’s what selling is really about – especially now in the 21st century. Capturing the heart as much or more than the logic. This is why in the professional photography world why projection sales is so big, so popular, and so important. Projection sales captures people in a closed environment, hits several senses – sight, sound, and sometimes taste (if snacks, etc are served), and creates an overwhelming emotion in the viewers.
So my question is for myself and you the reader – no matter what it is that you do. What are you selling? How can you make it an emotional sale? Not manipulative, but a strong feeling of connection.
