We’re now in the second half of 1 Samuel. We’ve read about the rise of Samuel and then Saul. You watched the heartbreaking mistakes of Saul. A few chapters ago, we were introduced to the great future king of Israel, David. Now read see the ultimate picture of friendship.
Start by reading 1 Samuel 20 for yourself, take notes, and compare what you hear from God with what I see and hear. The Bible is alive and active. You and I may not see the same things. And if you’ve missed any of the past posts of earlier chapters, you can find them all HERE.

A friend closer than a brother.
One of my favorite lines in the book of Proverbs is this:
There are friends who are friends, and there is a friend that is closer than a brother.
Proverbs 18:24
We’re not sure exactly who wrote this line, but it very well could have been Solomon, the son of David. I sometimes wonder if maybe Solomon wrote this after hearing the stories from his father about his deep friendship with Jonathan. David had lots of ‘friends’, but none were quite like Jonathan.
We need friends. More importantly, we each need a friend like Jonathan. This is one of the great stories in the Bible that displays a deep and caring friendship. The friendship is so deep David will years later find the closest living relative of Jonathan to bless him because of their friendship.
You need a friend like Jonathan.
Who in your life are you turning to for help, comfort and support? Of course, Jesus is the correct Sunday School answer, but we need human support too. We need people in our lives who care about us, who challenge us and who pick us up when we are down.
If you don’t have this kind of friend in your life, ask God to send one. We all need a friend like Jonathan.
