I’m sure your all fans of late 80’s and early 90’s rap music, so you recognize the title line as a song by Public Enemy (if you don’t remember the group, you probably remember this guy – Flava Flav).
The point of the song was a lot was said about Public Enemy. However, much of it wasn’t true.
Let me tell you…Don’t Believe the Hype!
Every day you hear lies told to you about your family, your job, your church, your children, your world, your home, you finances, your future, yourself. These lies come from different sources:
- Surrounding culture.
- Well meaning friends and family.
- Ourselves.
- Physical antagonists
- Our soul’s Enemy (Satan).
We need to know the truth, to combat what is false.
Will you not take what your god Chemosh gives you? Likewise, whatever the Lord our God has given us, we will possess. -Judges 11:24
Jephthah was one of the judges chosen by God to rule over Israel between Joshua and the first king Saul. One of the first challenges Jephthah faced was threats from the enemy Ammonite king.
This king tried to sell a lie to Jephthah – “I’m simply reclaiming the land Israel unrightfully stole from our people.” It sounded good – Israel had wronged the Ammonites by taking their land.
Judges 11 records Jephthah recognizing this as a lie. His response? Proclaim the truth!
The Ammonites actually attacked Moses and Israel 300 years earlier – when the Israelites were doing the right thing. Israel defended itself and in the process claimed land they rightfully won.
We are constantly being attacked with lies from every side. Like Jephthah, we need to be quick to recognize these lies, and respond with truth.
Normally this is an internal process. We need to shout to ourselves the truth from God’s perspective. Then it’s His job to defend us to outside sources.
