So right and so wrong
If we allow him to go on like this, soon everyone will believe in him. Then the Roman army will come and destroy both our Temple and nation. – John 11:48
It’s amazing how right and wrong we can be at the same time.
In this passage of John (which is quickly becoming one of my favorites), we see the immediate backlash from the raising of Lazarus from the dead. The Pharisees have gathered for one of their many meetings to discuss what in the world to do about Jesus.
When it comes down to it, they are worried about their way of life being destroyed. How right they were. Jesus did come to destroy.
The ancient prophet Jeremiah, who lived hundreds of years before Jesus, was called by God including these words:
Jesus wants our heart
Jesus came to uproot, tear down, destroy and overthrow the lords of our heart. However, it’s much greater than tearing down. He wants to build and plant HIS kingdom in it’s place.
As I guide, lead and pastor children, this is my goal. I want to see Jesus come in, destroy the thoughts, ways, desires and actions of the heart, and rebuild His kingdom. Honestly, it’s my goal for myself. I need Jesus to destroy me. I need less of me…more of Him.
Here are 5 ways you can help God capture your or your child’s heart, and allow His kingdom to be built in it’s place:
1. Pray.
As all parents of a 2-year-old know, the heart is a powerful thing. Ultimately it is Jesus who must destroy and rebuild. We can’t on our own. We need to constantly and consistently ask for His help.
2. Teachable Moments.
Some moments will carry much more weight than others when it comes to instruction. Look for these moments. Pray for the grace to speak when the opportunity comes (embrace the fear).
What about your own life…not just your child’s, your spouse, your friend? Are you looking for God’s correction in your own life? I admit, I hate it when I realize I’m the one who is at fault. However, when I allow Jesus to destroy me and build Him, I am better for it.
3. Community.
We need help. Our kids need help. We all need to see kids, teens, adults who love and follow Jesus.
A Sunday morning service is an important part, but so are other small group settings. Are you involved in a small group? If not, consider it.
4. Regular Devotions.
Church once a week isn’t enough for anyone. We all need a regular filling of God’s grace. I know this is a difficult task…we all are busy. How can you daily (or several times a week) point yourself or your child back to Jesus?
5. Pray.
Everything begins and ends with prayer. All the actions we do isn’t enough without the grace and mercy of God.
Pray that God will destroy the kingdoms of our hearts and our kids hearts, and He will rebuild His kingdom in it’s place!
