Blessings.
I’ve been meditating on the blessings of God recently. I’ve been thinking about what hinders the blessings of God. I’ve been pondering why God blesses when He does.
I don’t believe in a series or set of steps to ensure blessing. No magic beans or wands involved in receiving good things from Him.
I also don’t believe blessing always means improved finances or health, but I do believe there are principles which allow God’s blessings to flow to our lives.
Bigger.
Maybe the most important principle we must comes to terms with is God is big and beyond. In our daily devotions as a staff on Monday, we talked about the “fear of God.”
The term “fear of God” means a couple of things. One the one hand it refers to a literal fear – being scared of God’s power and strength. Yet the “fear of God” also means to live in awe and wonder of who God is.
The fear of God is recognizing He is bigger than. It is understanding He goes far beyond what we can imagine and comprehend.
Bigger than.
In 2 Samuel 7, David has a “fear of God” moment. When David attempts to bless God, God actually turns around and blesses David. David is forced to step back, analyze what he sees and hears from God, and David can’t help but be amazed by the largeness of God.
Here are just two phrases David uses to bring this fear of God into focus:
Who am I, O Sovereign Lord… -2 Samuel 7:18b
There is no one like you. We have never even heard of another God like you! -2 Samuel 7:22b
A Volcanic Moment
For David, this “God is bigger than moment” came through a promise. In our staff meeting, we talked about it coming in experiencing the power of a volcano, contemplating the cosmos or watching a documentary on the intricacy of the human ear.
For me personally, it was the volcano. At the age of 20, I traveled to Guatemala with Kia to attend Spanish language school. One of the benefits to this program was the ability to take side trips around the country. One of the trips we took was climbing a live volcano.
I’ve written about this experience before, but the sheer power and majesty of standing on top of a mountain set to explode at any moment was amazing. It really is indescribable.
In that moment, I couldn’t help but realize my smallness next to the God who created and controlled this wonder of nature.
I am nothing. God is bigger than.
E tu?
You need this moment in your life too.
All of us want God’s blessings in our lives. His blessing begins with saying, like David, “Who am I? There is no one like you.”
