Throughout the last 5-6 years of meeting photographers on a regular basis, whether it be in trade shows or conferences, on the phone, via email or a forum; I’ve found a significant shift.
I’ve seen the average photographer go from a person who is full-time in the business and makes a majority of their household income to someone who is part-time, yet desiring to make this their true profession.
Understandably, the biggest hinderance for most of those I’ve talked with is fear – fear of the unknown, fear of not financially making ends meet. Like I said, it’s understandable. Risk is scary.
What I think most photographers (both part-time and full-time) need is hope. Hope that they can either sustain their business, or they can create a business that they will be able to sustain. Of course, they also need hope that they won’t just sustain their business, but also their family. They need hope that they won’t just keep their head above water, but that they’ll truly succeed.
To do that – to have hope – you need a plan. You have to have an idea of how you can turn your part-time hobby into a full-time career. It’s possible. I don’t say that about photographers from 5, 10, 20 years ago. I say that from observing photographers today.
But you must have a plan. Check out this short video, it will give you the hope you need. Then get the book, it will help you create a plan to succeed.
