It’s been quite a while since I’ve posted a Free Music Friday blog post. I mostly share this info via Twitter (follow me @andybondurant or search hashtag #FreeMusicFriday). I have found so much good stuff lately, that I feel compelled to share.
Before I begin, let me share 2 notes to those who may be new to The Collective and this post.
- All of the links I share are legitimate, music blogs which share this music legally. They have been given the rights to offer a song – usually as promotion for upcoming albums.
- I do not suggest or condone using any of this music in your sales presentations, “shows”, etc. I recommend using Triple Scoop Music who licenses music just for that purpose.
Do you have an anthem?
Jon Acuff is a blogger I follow and definitely suggest following. He recently posted about every dream needing a soundtrack. I agree.
I call this an anthem. A song that big, huge, sweeping. It’s difficult to explain, but you know it when you hear it.
Your dream needs a song that pushes you forward, when it hits the playlist you instantly start working more focused.
I have two tracks that I would call anthem songs.
- Coldplay just released their new album, Mylo Xyloto. I got the album the day it was released, and it’s good. One thing Coldplay is great at, is creating anthem songs. The song you want – Every Teardrop is a Waterfall – is re-mixed and free.
- Lupe Fiasco teamed with Ellie Goulding and Bassnectar to create this anthem song – Lightwork. Goulding’s vocals, mixed with Bassnectar’s beats, mixed with Lupe’s rap makes this an anthem. It’s rare for a rap to be straight two minutes long. Awesome.
Nothing’s better than a mix tape.
If you are still reading this, then you are probably the kind of person who loved to put together the perfect mix tape for the right occasion. It’s an art (and one made much easier with CD’s, MP3’s and computers – kids today had no idea what it used to take).
Neon Indian put together a mix tape for RCRDLBL.com and I suggest checking it out. I’ll be honest though, I only loved the 2nd 2/3’s of the songs, so here are my suggestions or download (you can choose the entire mix or each individual song).
- Emergency Room by Ford & Lopatin – it’s the bass line from every 80’s cop movie that moves into the dark scenes.
- Hood Pass Intact by Dan Funk – 90’s rap and R&B flavor at it’s best.
- Blessa by Toro & Moi – get anything from these guys. Love their new album, Underneath The Pine.
- Cold Shoulder by Kevin Ayers – his voice has a French sound that I just love.
- Post Physical by PicturePlane – This is an electronic/house song that takes a bit to get moving.
- Summon the Sound by S.C.U.M. – 80’s new wave at it’s best.
- No Reason by VEVA – kind of a trance/pop sound with some nice vocals
This and that.
I’ve known about Major Lazer for a while, but didn’t realize that Diplo makes up 1/2 of the group. That makes Major Lazer awesome. Here’s a track – Original Don with some funky stuff going on. Like an electric Octoberfest tuba band.
DA & the Supa Dups put out Too Cool that has this Jamaican dance hall feel mixed with electric R&B. It’s just a fun dance song.
Jay Electronica teamed up with the boys from Mobb Deep to create this track that is borderline anthem music. The opening alone is worth a listen to Call of Duty.

Love the mix of Every Teardrop is a Waterfall by Avicii thanks for sharing that. When I first heard this tune on XM it instantly took me back to 1980 and Rush’s Spirit of the Radio (at least until the last couple of verses where they start ripping on the industry).
Anyway, bottom line is I would love to see what today’s creatives could do with some of my dinosaur music.

Gotta admit, I don’t remember that song (I do remember Rush). Thanks for sharing!
