I’m getting toward the end of my notes from spa Event Fall 2011. This one may be the most powerful of everything shared.
Sometimes we get caught up in comparing ourselves to anyone and everyone else. We compare ourselves to speakers. We compare ourselves to competition. We compare ourselves to the people we work with.
We do so much comparing that we believe that we can’t ever be like them.
Wanna know the problem? It’s true.
It just doesn’t matter…
You can’t be like them. You can’t be like them because you aren’t them. You aren’t the person or business that you are comparing yourself to.
Brian Shindle shared this great video to inspire you the next time you get too caught up with these feelings. It’s a clip from the late 70’s comedy Meatballs featuring Bill Murray.
The film is about a summer camp (North Star) that enters into a yearly competition against a competing camp (Mohawk). North Star isn’t very successful, and Murray delivers this speech to rouse the team.
What does matter?
What Murray doesn’t include in that speech is some things do matter.
When we focus too much on the things that don’t matter (like what our competition or others in the industry are doing), we miss out on the things we can and should be doing. This is what really matters.
The key is to KNOW what matters to you, your business and your photography. Focus on that.
Focus on what matters.
Do what matters.
How do you make sure to stay focused on what matters to you and your business?
