Welcome back to 1 Samuel! Every Wednesday and Friday, I post my thoughts from one chapter of 1 Samuel – today is chapter 15. Read 1 Samuel 15 for yourself, take notes, and compare what you hear from God with what I see and hear. God’s Word is alive and active. We don’t need to see the same things!
If you’ve missed any of the past posts of earlier chapters, you can find them all HERE.
If you are new to reading the Bible, I encourage you to read my post, How to Understand the Bible. It gives you 5 tools to read the Bible, so you understand it. You can also go back and read through the story of Joseph and his family and all of Luke with me.
So let’s go ahead and jump in!
Don’t Forget: You are a Leader!
It is easy to lose sight of the forest through the trees. Saul never believed in himself. He too easily saw the people, but he lost sight of the kingdom. He forgot he was king. Saul lost sight of his own anointing.
When confronting Saul, Samuel makes this comment,
“Although you may think little of yourself, are you not the leader of the tribes of Israel? The Lord has anointed you king of Israel.”
1 Samuel 15:17
Saul was called to lead the nation of Israel, but he too easily forgot his place. That may sound ridiculous, but as a parent how easy is it to forget our role is to lead our children. As a boss, how quickly can we forget our role of leading our team. As a teacher, how quickly can we forget our role of leading our class.
Be careful, don’t replace the word ‘lead’ with parent, manage or teach (or whatever other leadership role you may fill). Saul commanded an army, but he didn’t lead troops into the righteous call God had for them. He thought too little of himself.
Don’t think too little of yourself. You are a leader. Lead!
If we forget to fill that role, there are consequences. God may take authority from us. The nation is ripped from Saul and his family. It takes a generation for the fulfillment, but it begins here…with Saul forgetting who he was.
Don’t forget…you are a leader. Lead.
