Welcome to the book of 1 Samuel! Every Wednesday and Friday, I post my thoughts from one chapter of 1 Samuel – today is chapter 9. Read 1 Samuel 9 for yourself, take notes, and compare what you hear from God with what I see and hear. God’s Word is alive and active. We don’t need to see the same things!
If you are new to reading the Bible, I encourage you to read my post, How to Understand the Bible. It gives you 5 tools to read the Bible, so you understand it. You can also go back and read through the story of Joseph and his family and all of Luke with me.
So let’s go ahead and jump in!
More than looking for a donkey.
Imagine being Saul. He’s a son (young enough to be sent on an errand to fetch a lost donkey) of a fairly un-influential family in a fairly un-influential tribe in the whole of Israel. Saul is on the outside of the national politics of the day because he’s never heard of Samuel, who is ruling this loose collaboration of twelve tribes.
Saul is searching for donkeys, and he becomes king. Read that again. Let it sink in. A kid doing his father‘s errand comes home (as we’ll soon see) a king.
Too often we get caught up in our own inconsequential agendas (looking for a donkey, doing homework, washing dishes, changing diapers), and we miss what God is really doing. What is God doing in your life? Are you looking for it? In the small, boring things, do you see what God is doing?
Maybe there is a greater purpose in the homework, dishes and diapers your working on.
He wants to do larger things in you than looking for donkeys!
Step into it. Enjoy it. God is ready to bless you with more!
