Kids help us keep life in perspective. It doesn’t have to be your own kids, grandkids or other extended family either. Any kid you spend any time with will remind you about little secrets in life.
Every Sunday after church, Kia and I round-up our kids from their various classes and they inevitably run around a little crazy with their friends. Yesterday a whole group of boys discovered the joy of throwing paper airplanes in large rooms. There is nothing like making a plane (or having someone make a plane for you) and seeing how far and high it will fly.
During their delight in this game, several of the boys made me stop my conversation and watch them throw their planes. They wanted me to see how far and high they would get.
They were so proud of their planes.
Confirmation
They also needed confirmation that what they were doing was “good.”
I don’t think that we grow out of that need for to be confirmed. The desire to be told that we are doing something of value, worth and importance. Like a cat, we arch our back into the verbal strokes we receive from someone when we’ve done a good job (have a good idea, help someone out, etc, etc, etc).
I read an article the other day about this very thing for those of us dreaming about doing big things in business. We need those closest to us to believe in what we are doing.
I’m lucky, I have that support system in my life. Kia, my kids, my family, my friends all believe in my talents, abilities and dreams. There always some ‘helpful’ advise thrown in, but each say in their own ways, “You can do it!”
I don’t know of you have someone in your life encouraging you that you can do it. That your dream is valid. That the worst that can happen is you fail, move on, but still be supported.
For what it’s worth, let this post be that encouragement for you.
You can do it!
