2012 Word of the Year
I learned from my 2011 Word of the Year (freedom) the power video has in learning and growing. It puts in a story how I am feeling about my word, my life, my situation, my future.
My word for 2012 is RISK. Through my experience of applying for Photographers Ignite, I learned a great lesson already this year.
Last week I searched for the Winston Churchill quote (Never, never, never give in) I used in the Linsanity article when I re-found a video. I know I’ve seen it or at least the story. It’s self-explanatory, so I don’t need to give it any context.
Look a little deeper.
Obviously, the main point of the video is “Don’t give up.” (which is a message I love), but as I watched I saw something deeper.
The runner, Derek Redmond, sacrificed years of his life for that moment. It was a HUGE risk. In some ways, a risk I can’t fathom. He sold-out for that moment.
He was exactly where he wanted to be at that moment (when he was hurt). He was the favorite.
…and then the pain. As you could clearly see, it was much more than physical pain. It was deep emotional hurt.
Pain that cuts to the core.
RISK carries with it the potential for pain. Not just disappointment, not just frustration, not just sadness but risk can bring deep pain. However it’s temporary.
In fact, take a look at Derek Redmond’s website. You’ll see if you were to ask him, he would tell you it was all worth it. He wouldn’t trade not taking the risk just to avoid the pain.
It’s a lesson I’m learning this year.
What is your word of the year? What lesson(s) are you learning through your word of the year?
