Sarah Kay
Sarah Kay is a spoken word artist who also travels the country encouraging children and teens to express themselves through spoken word poetry. She began her story at the Bowery Poetry Club in NYC at the age of 14, and she’s never looked back.
In her TED presentation (which I encourage you to watch below) she shares 3 important steps she took to becoming a spoken word artist.
- I can. Sarah had a breakthrough moment after one of her first performances. She connected with her audience. She realized at that moment that she could do this thing she had fallen in love with.
- I will. Not only could she, but she chose to continue, to grow, to improve, to learn.
- I won’t look like you. Sarah started her path by writing poems that were “indignant” because that was the poetry she saw and heard. Down the road, she realized she didn’t HAVE to write something that wasn’t her.
Those are great reminders for any artist at any stage of their road. You can. You will. You don’t have to fit.
Happy Mother’s Day.
So why am I sharing this today, on Mother’s Day? Because Sarah Kay starts off her TED presentation with a poem dedicated to her future daughter. It’s what she has learned and wants to pass on as a mother.
Also, if you enjoy the poem as much as I did, you can purchase an illustrated book of the poem entitled ‘B‘.
What will you say to your daughter?
