I love 80’s Sitcoms
The Facts of Life, Diff’rent Strokes, Silver Spoons, Webster and Alf were some of my favorite sitcoms from the 80’s. I also liked Who’s the Boss? Who doesn’t love some Tony Danza? Okay, Alyssa Milano probably had something to do with it too.
This week, I’ve been put in charge of the Cross Points Church devotions. We are going through the book of Matthew, and I’m specifically covering chapters 7-11. One of the patterns I’ve seen is the theme of authority.
Who’s the Boss?
Matthew seems to be addressing the same thing Tony, Angela and Mona constantly are arguing about…Who’s the boss? Everyone who encounters Jesus in either word or action, soon realize he is boss. He carries an authority like no one they’ve ever encountered (Matthew 7:29).
Matthew 8 shows that Jesus has power and authority over sickness, nature and the demonic. But as you read the chapter notice something…Jesus never takes authority over anyone or anything without being asked first.
He’s asked to heal the sick. He’s asked to calm the storm. He’s even asked by the demons to be sent into a herd of pigs! Jesus never takes authority without being asked.
We all need Jesus to take authority in different areas of our lives – financial, marital, family, relationships, etc. He is waiting to be asked. He doesn’t have to wait…he chooses to wait.
Asking him to take authority pleases him. It shows him your great faith (Matthew 8:10). Show Jesus, he is boss.
