Stories about purpose make me happy.
I don’t know if you saw this, only like a million people did on YouTube, but Pharrell cried on Oprah.
First, yes, Oprah is still on TV (I didn’t realize it either).
Second, Pharrell is a musical artist who’s been around for a while, but recently his song, “Happy” went absolutely nuts (over 187 million views on YouTube!). This, lead him to be interviewed by Oprah.
All, I’ve seen of the interview with Oprah is this quick 2 minute clip. It’s all I need to see to know Pharrell has purpose.
Pharrell is a guy who understands the role he is meant to play.
Why is purpose so hard to figure out?
When you see someone like Pharrell do what he does, it’s easy to write it off as an uber-talented guy doing what uber-talented guys do. There is more too it. There is something of that caliber in each of us. It may not reach 200 million people all over the world, but there is something great in each of us.
How do you find it?
That is the question that stumps so many . We just can’t seem to figure out what in the world we are supposed to do in life. We get overwhelmed with the whole idea of it, so we quit trying and watch TV or read a book or smoke a joint or take a drink or…
It’s not that hard. I promise.
I struggled with trying to figure out what my purpose, my call, my story is. I fought for years to come to grips with what I was to do.
I tried too hard. Most of us try to hard.
Oswald Chambers is more famous in death than he was in life. He wrote a book of devotionals called My Utmost for His Highest.
Chambers says this about purpose:
If we are in fellowship and oneness with God and recognize that He is taking us into His purposes, then we will no longer strive to find out what His purposes are.
We strive and work and try to hard at the wrong thing. It’s about walking with God and doing what we love.
What do you love?
To find your purpose, your call, your role in the Story, you need to know what you truly love. Donald Miller puts it like this (my paraphrase),
God simply wants to walk with us. Do what it is you want to do, and He will walk with you.
We make it too hard, too complicated, too spiritual. God wants to walk with us, do the things we love, and live purpose through these two things. What is it you enjoy doing?
Pharrell might put it like this,
What makes you happy?
So let me end with this question…
