Last Sunday, I made this simple note for myself.
It’s not about me.
The note came from the sermon I was listening to at church. It was in reference to more spiritual things, but I applied it to business. It’s a broad principle that goes way beyond my business, the photography business, or anything in the service industry. When we move beyond ourselves and help find solutions for others, we find fulfillment
Too often, I get caught up in what I think and feel. I get stuck in particular numbers or analytics. I worry about whether the business is going be successful financially. When that happens, I worry. Fear is debilitating. Fear, worry and doubt lock you up. Sometimes, it may lead to anger which can drive me, but in the end the accomplishment will be empty. Because it was about me.
I want what I do and create to matter. In order to make what I do matter to others (and myself), I have to focus outside of myself.
From all that I’ve observed, this is what I’ve found with this principle. When I focus beyond myself, things like finances and client bases take care of themselves. It doesn’t mean that I ignore them, it means that I focus on helping others find success to make what I do successful.
I hope you’ll walk with me to get beyond you to helping others. Give back through your business – it’s not about you.
