Day 9 – Genesis 45
Last month I read through the story of Joseph in the Bible (Genesis 37-50). Each day I was challenged to share what I learned. Here was my insight into Genesis 45.
The big reveal!
Today it finally happens – the big reveal! Joseph completely reveals himself to his brothers, who are left literally speechless. It’s not often a slave rises to the second in command of the most powerful nation on the planet. Has it ever happened? It’s even more rare when that slave is your brother.
Joseph’s rise to power, though, isn’t the point of this story. It’s Joseph’s attitude.
You know the curmudgeonly, old person who’s day consists of keeping kids of his lawn? I don’t want to be him. I don’t want to end up as a bitter old (or youngish) man. Joseph response to his brothers is important. It can keep me from bitterness.
“So it was God who sent me here, not you! And he is the one who made me an adviser to Pharaoh—the manager of his entire palace and the governor of all Egypt.” Genesis 45:8
Don’t miss what Joseph does. He takes control of his life, emotions, feelings. Joseph has made a choice. He chooses to forgive his brothers and believe God orchestrated the events in their lives. It tells me I have agency over my feelings and beliefs about God, myself and others. I can choose to be angry and biter, or I can choose to believe God is doing something bigger and better.
You are given the same choice. You can be angry, blame others, give agency to everyone else. You can allow someone else to take control of your life…Or you can choose to take control of your feelings. You can choose to forgive. You can choose to believe God is directing you toward a greater and better purpose.
Don’t be angry. Don’t become bitter. Take agency of your life. God is doing something bigger and better in your life.
Daily Blessing: God, may I take control of my own feelings, emotions, and actions today.
Daily Challenge: Is there an area you have given control over to something or someone else? Are you becoming angry and bitter about it? Choose to take ownership of your feelings and emotions today!
