We all have dreams.
I dare you. Name it. Say it out loud.
The reason you read this blog, get on forums, attend seminars and workshops is that you have a dream. The dream varies specifically for each of you, but it’s just as real for each of you.
You have a dream.
We all have hurdles to those dreams.
As much as we all have dreams, we also have barriers or hurdles to overcome in order to see the dream as reality. Some of the barriers are internal, while others are external.
Here are 7 barriers between you and your dream:
1. Finances.
Money (or the lack of money) holds us back from achieving our dreams.
Debt can be a major inhibitor.
Financial considerations may keep you at your “day” job, so you are only able to pursue your dream on a part-time basis.
2. Relationships
Friends, family, co-workers can hold us back from passionately pursuing a dream. When you have supportive people in your life it’s so much easier to follow your heart. It’s a lot more fun to chase a dream when you have people who believe in you.
3. Time.
It’s the “someday” syndrome. Someday you’ll have time to create a great website, build a studio, begin charging professional prices, etc, etc, etc. While you are listing all of your somedays, time (real time) continues ticking away.
Here’s reality. You don’t have as many “somedays” as you think, but you do have more time (real time) than you believe.
4. Pride.
Pride keeps us from charging what we need to be a sustainable business. Pride holds us back from asking our friends and acquaintances “stupid question”. Pride forces us shooting the same way we did 5 years, 2 years, 6 months ago because it’s the “right” way.
5. Security.
Security is all of the above. Waiting until you have enough time, money, the right people on board to make the jump into living your dream full-on.
Here’s a question to ask yourself. When will you be secure enough to move on? Will it ever really happen? Be honest with yourself. I dare you.
6. Vision.
When you don’t see what is out in front, or what is possible you don’t move. You don’t pursue dreams when the dream is fuzzy or unclear.
7. Fear.
I saved fear for the last, though I could have just as easily put it at the top. Fear is somewhere within the other 6. Fear tells you to wait because you don’t have (fill in the blank).
How to hurdle these 7 barriers.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. The key to achieving anything in life is being intentional.
If you want to see a dream as reality in your life, you have to do the hard work to make it reality.
I know. It’s easy to write but difficult to do. You will question yourself. You will be afraid. You will be frustrated. You may fail.
It’s okay. You will be stronger. You will be better on the other side.
I and others have written more on each of the above 7 barriers, so I’ll let you read more on each subject.
